Overview

MPLX’s Natural Gas and NGL Services segment primarily engages in the gathering, processing and transportation of natural gas as well as the fractionation, storage, transportation and marketing of natural gas liquids (NGLs). We have long-term relationships with a diverse set of producer customers in many crude oil and natural gas resource plays, including the Permian Basin, Marcellus Shale, Utica Shale, STACK Shale and Bakken Shale, among others.

Natural Gas and NGL Services  Value Chain

The midstream natural gas industry is the link between the exploration for, and production of, raw natural gas and the delivery of its hydrocarbon components to end-use markets.

Natural Gas and NGL Services     Operations

We have an extensive network of strategically placed, high-quality assets and pride ourselves on providing safe, reliable and efficient service. Our relentless customer focus, demonstrated by our ability to offer an integrated package of services and our flexibility in considering various types of contractual arrangements, makes MPLX a premier midstream partner. We embody an operational excellence culture and strive for continuous improvement across all our assets. We continue to strategically deploy growth capital on projects that expand our processing capacity in key regions in support of our customers’ goals.

Natural Gas Gathering Systems

We operate natural gas gathering systems that service our producer customers and the composition of the raw or untreated gas at their wellheads. For dry gas, we gather and, if necessary, treat the gas and deliver it to downstream transmission systems. For wet gas that contains heavier and more valuable hydrocarbons, we gather the gas for processing at a processing complex.

Natural Gas Processing Complexes

Our natural gas processing complexes remove the heavier and more valuable hydrocarbon components from natural gas. This allows the residue gas remaining after extraction of the NGLs to meet the quality specifications for long-haul pipeline transportation or commercial use. The heavier and more valuable hydrocarbon components, which have been extracted as a mixed NGL stream, can be further separated into their component parts through the process of fractionation.

NGL Fractionation Facilities

Our NGL fractionation facilities separate the mixture of extracted NGLs into individual purity product components for end-use sale.

Storage, Transportation and Marketing

Once the raw natural gas has been treated or processed and the raw NGL mix has been fractionated into individual NGL purity product components, the NGL components are stored, transported and marketed to end-use markets.

Joint Ventures

MPLX has ownership in various joint interests. Just a couple examples are Sherwood Midstream, which includes our Sherwood complex in the Marcellus Shale, the largest gas-processing plant in North America; and the Whistler natural gas pipeline, which is part of a combined platform focused on connecting Permian Basin supply to incremental LNG export markets on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
